Trump backs Darline Graham in South Carolina Senate runoff amid GOP split

South Carolina voters will head to the polls on Tuesday for a Republican primary runoff that pits Sen. Darline Graham against Rep. Ralph Norman. The race has taken on added significance after President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Graham and began calling state GOP leaders to secure their support.

Trump’s personal outreach

Following Graham’s narrow first‑place finish on Aug. 11, Trump called two of her primary opponents—Rep. Russell Fry and former Gov. Mark Sanford—asking them to endorse her. Fry delayed his endorsement, waiting until three days after an additional call from the president before publicly backing Graham. Sanford has remained neutral, and his son, Landon Sanford, has endorsed Norman.

Graham’s debate stumble

Graham’s campaign was rattled after a recent debate when she could not answer a question about Taiwan and the South China Sea, describing national security as “not my thing.” She later told reporters that South Carolinians are more concerned about their pocketbooks than distant geopolitical issues. The gaffe has prompted criticism from some GOP figures, including former state Rep. Adam Morgan, who called the moment a “serious gut check” for Trump’s political influence.

Local GOP reaction

Several South Carolina Republicans have voiced reservations. Dorchester County GOP Chairman CJ Westfall noted a surge of group texts among hard‑line Republicans after Graham’s answer. Former Gov. Nikki Haley, a longtime Norman ally, posted on X that Sen. Lindsey Graham is “well informed” on national security, implying Graham’s lack of expertise. Heritage Foundation head Kevin Roberts labeled Graham’s response “embarrassing and inexcusable.”

Endorsements and funding

Despite the controversy, Graham has gathered a growing list of endorsements. She now has the backing of Sen. Tim Scott, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, and several anti‑abortion groups, including the Susan B. Anthony List, which followed Trump’s lead. Meanwhile, Norman has leaned on personal finances, loaning his campaign $1.3 million after a prior $400,000 contribution.

Implications for Trump

A loss for Graham could signal a weakening of Trump’s sway over the South Carolina GOP, especially after recent primary defeats of other Trump‑backed candidates. White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster defended the endorsement, calling it “the most powerful endorsement in the history of American politics.” Critics, however, argue that the president’s push may be backfiring among the state’s “hard‑core” Republican base.

What’s at stake

The runoff will determine which candidate advances to the general election for the Senate seat vacated by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Voters are watching closely as the race becomes a litmus test for Trump’s influence within the party and for the direction of the South Carolina Republican establishment.
