James, a West Point graduate and Army Ranger, will face off against two-term Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the general election.

James, who was endorsed by Trump in late June, defeated multimillionaire businessman Perry Johnson in the primary. Johnson had referred to James as a ‘DEI candidate’ and accused him of playing the ‘race card’ during a debate. Despite being outspent by Johnson, James secured the nomination with the support of Trump and his proven leadership capabilities.
James told Fox News that ‘nobody outworks a ranger’ and that ‘money isn’t the only thing. People want someone who resonates with them, someone who has the proven leadership capability to turn the state around.’ Trump had campaigned with James at a rally in Michigan, giving him a boost in the primary.
The primary election was marked by controversy, with Johnson accusing James of playing the ‘race card.’ However, James maintained that he was the best candidate to lead the state and secure a Republican victory in the general election.
