President Donald Trump scored another endorsement win with the Louisiana Senate runoff victory of Rep. Julia Letlow. Letlow, who was backed by Trump, defeated state Treasurer John Fleming to capture the Republican nomination. This victory is seen as another win for Trump as he works to fill Congress with loyal lawmakers.
Trump’s Endorsement Power
Trump’s endorsement power has been on display in GOP primaries over the past two months, with his candidates ousting incumbents he targeted in several states, including Louisiana. Letlow will face either farmer Jamie Davis or Navy veteran Gary Crockett in the midterm election.
Letlow was backed by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a top Trump ally, and highlighted her support from Trump throughout her Senate campaign. Fleming argued he was the most conservative candidate in the GOP Senate primary.
Trump celebrated the defeat of Sen. Bill Cassidy, who was sent packing after voting to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial. Cassidy took a jab at Trump, saying, “When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. But you don’t pout, you don’t whine. You don’t claim the election was stolen… You don’t manufacture some excuse.”
