Trump Administration Unveils Patriotic Exhibit at DC’s Freedom Plaza

The Trump administration has unveiled a new patriotic installation at Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington, D.C. This site, historically associated with political protests, now features statues of Revolutionary War figures, including Caesar Rodney and 12 bronze soldiers, in a tribute to the patriots who helped secure American independence.

Honoring Revolutionary Heroes

Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized the importance of the exhibit, stating, “This exhibition featuring Caesar Rodney and the 12 Soldiers of the Revolutionary War is a powerful tribute to the patriots whose service and sacrifice helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.” The installation is part of a broader effort to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary by highlighting the courage and exceptionalism of the nation’s founders.

Caesar Rodney is celebrated for his pivotal overnight ride from Delaware to Philadelphia in July 1776, which helped secure unanimous support for American independence. The 12 other soldiers represented include notable figures such as Simon Knowles, Joseph Warren, and James Armistead Lafayette, among others.

Transforming a Historic Protest Site

Freedom Plaza, originally established in 1980 and renamed in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1988, has been a focal point for political protests over the years. It was notably used during the Occupy D.C. movement in 2011 and the George Floyd protests in 2020. The plaza’s transformation under the Trump administration marks a shift towards celebrating American history and patriotism.

During the 2020 protests, a statue of Caesar Rodney was removed in Wilmington due to debates over historical figures with ties to slavery. This statue has now found a new home at Freedom Plaza, symbolizing a renewed focus on America’s founding values.

The plaza will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation, providing visitors with an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for American independence nearly 250 years ago.
