Trump administration tightens U.S. visas for South Africans linked to land seizures

Washington — In a decisive move to safeguard American interests, the Trump administration announced new visa restrictions on certain South African nationals. The policy, unveiled Tuesday by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, targets individuals the State Department says are responsible for or complicit in race‑based discrimination, uncompensated land seizures, or the incitement of imminent violence against minority ethnic or racial groups in South Africa.

Policy rationale and legal authority

Rubio explained that the restrictions are applied under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the administration to deem foreign nationals inadmissible when their entry could have serious adverse foreign‑policy consequences. By invoking this provision, the administration signals that it will not tolerate policies abroad that undermine property rights, the rule of law, or the safety of minority communities.

Specific focus on Afrikaner concerns

The new measures respond to longstanding concerns about South Africa’s Expropriation Act, which the administration says enables the seizure of Afrikaner agricultural property without compensation. In February 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to prioritize humanitarian relief for Afrikaners who are victims of racial discrimination and to halt aid to South Africa to the extent permitted by law.

Rubio underscored the administration’s stance on the issue, writing on X, “As @POTUS has made clear, the South African people are being failed by a government that is destroying its economy through an obsessive pursuit of racial grievance against the Afrikaner minority.” He added that those responsible for these injustices “have no place in the United States.”

Family members also affected

The State Department clarified that immediate family members of designated individuals may also be subject to the restrictions, reinforcing the administration’s comprehensive approach to preventing any indirect support for policies it deems hostile to American values.

Administration’s broader foreign‑policy agenda

This action aligns with President Trump’s broader foreign‑policy agenda of holding foreign governments accountable for actions that threaten property rights, religious liberty, and the safety of minority groups. By leveraging immigration tools, the administration seeks to apply pressure without resorting to military force, reflecting a prudent use of executive authority.

Response from critics and allies

Critics, including some South African officials, have labeled the restrictions as interference in domestic affairs. However, the administration’s position is clear: when a foreign government enacts policies that enable discrimination or uncompensated land seizures, the United States has a right—and a responsibility—to protect its own security and uphold the principles of liberty and property rights.

Rubio’s announcement also highlighted ongoing concerns about rural crime and “violent and dehumanizing rhetoric” in South Africa, further justifying the need for a firm U.S. response.

What comes next

The State Department will begin processing visa applications under the new criteria immediately. Applicants deemed to be involved in the cited activities will be denied entry, and existing visas may be reviewed for compliance. The administration has pledged to monitor the situation closely and adjust the policy as needed to ensure it remains effective and consistent with American interests.

While the White House and State Department did not provide additional comment to Fox News Digital, the rollout of these restrictions marks the latest escalation in the Trump administration’s dispute with the South African government over its treatment of Afrikaners and other minority populations.
