Trump administration reviews Mexican strawberry imports, possible tariffs could raise prices

The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to issue its preliminary finding on the investigation into Mexican winter‑harvested strawberries by August 18. The Trump administration is examining whether growers in Mexico are selling the fruit at prices that undercut American producers, a determination that could result in new tariffs on the imports.

Why strawberries matter to American consumers

Strawberries are a year‑round staple for many households, offering a taste of summer even in the depths of winter. Last year, 98% of all strawberry imports came from Mexico, valued at more than $1 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Domestic production slows during the colder months, making Mexican fruit a critical source for grocery shelves.

Who is pushing the case

The lawsuit was filed by Strawberry Growers for Fair Trade, a coalition of Florida strawberry producers who harvest during the winter season. Lead counsel Daniel Pickard says Mexican imports have grown faster than demand, taking market share from U.S. growers by selling at lower prices. If the case succeeds, Pickard expects any tariffs to have a “relatively modest” impact on consumer prices while helping American farmers compete.

Potential impact on shoppers

Analysts note that a modest tariff could add a few cents per pound to the retail price of strawberries. The situation mirrors a recent antidumping duty on Mexican tomatoes, which raised prices by about 12.8% year‑over‑year, though other factors such as adverse weather in Mexico and freezing temperatures in Florida also contributed to that increase.

How the process works

Even after the preliminary finding, the final tariff rate could change. A similar case involving Italian pasta imports saw an initial proposal of up to 92% duties, which were later reduced to under 10% after additional information was reviewed. Those lower rates helped avoid a sharp price jump for U.S. consumers and preserved access to many pasta brands.

What comes next

The Commerce Department’s preliminary determination will be released by August 18, but a final ruling could take several months. Stakeholders on both sides are watching closely, as the outcome may influence not only strawberry prices but also broader discussions about trade policy ahead of the midterm elections, where consumer‑price concerns are likely to be a key issue.

For now, shoppers can expect the usual seasonal price fluctuations, but the possibility of new tariffs adds another variable to the cost of one of America’s favorite fruits.
