Fourth of July celebrations are proceeding as scheduled across the Triangle, despite the ongoing drought conditions in the area. Cities such as Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and Durham have confirmed that their holiday events will take place as planned, with some implementing water restrictions to mitigate the drought’s impact.
Drought Conditions and Fire Risks
State forestry officials have noted that while drought conditions remain a concern, fire risks are currently lower than they were earlier in the spring. According to Phillip Jackson with the NC Forest Service, the reduced fire risk is due to the time of year, as things do not ignite as quickly or spread as fast as they did in March and April.
However, officials will continue to monitor conditions ahead of the holiday and remind residents that all events remain weather-dependent. Chapel Hill, for instance, has decided to replace its traditional fireworks display with a drone show.
