A woman and a child have died after a boat overturned in New York harbor on Saturday night, police said. The capsizing happened near Liberty Island, home to the iconic Statue of Liberty.
Police divers and aviation teams were sent to the scene after receiving a 911 call at about 10:25 p.m., the NYPD said. Twelve people were rescued, while divers later located the woman and infant in the water, it said. Both were transported to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The US Coast Guard said investigators are en route to interview the vessel’s captain as they continue to investigate what caused it to capsize. No arrests have been made, per the NYPD statement.
