A tragic accident occurred in Sumter County, Florida, on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the life of a 65-year-old cyclist. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident happened at approximately 1:54 PM on County Road 48.
The FHP report states that a 70-year-old man from Valdosta, Georgia, was driving a tractor-trailer eastbound on CR-48. At the same time, a 65-year-old Crystal River man was riding an e-bicycle eastbound along the south shoulder of the same road.
As the two traveled east of County Road 575, and before the tractor-trailer could reach him, the bicyclist lost control of his e-bike. The rider overturned directly into the path of the oncoming roadway and was subsequently struck by the truck.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene, but the e-bike rider had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the crash site. The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the names of either individual involved.
