Traffic Challenges Persist in Maumee Due to I-475 Southbound Closures

Residents and commuters in Maumee, Ohio, are experiencing significant traffic congestion due to ongoing construction work on Interstate 475. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has closed the southbound lanes from the U.S. 24 interchange to Dixie Highway in Perrysburg, leading to increased traffic on local roads.

Local Efforts to Alleviate Traffic

Maumee Police Chief Josh Sprow has been actively involved in addressing the traffic issues. He noted that the increased volume of vehicles on Conant Street, particularly during weekends, has been a major source of frustration for drivers. The police chief emphasized the importance of keeping intersections clear to allow emergency vehicles to pass through.

In response to the congestion, Chief Sprow has been in discussions with the city’s public service director about adjusting the timing of traffic lights in Uptown Maumee. However, he acknowledged the complexity of the task, as changes could potentially impact other areas, such as the Anthony Wayne Trail.

ODOT’s Progress and Future Plans

Despite the challenges, ODOT has made progress on the roadwork. Over the weekend, crews successfully laid asphalt on a two-mile stretch of the southbound lanes from the Maumee River to Route 25/Dixie Highway. ODOT spokesperson Kelsie Hoagland expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and noted that more closures are planned for the coming weekends, with northbound lanes scheduled for repairs in July.

During the closures, Maumee police have been vigilant in monitoring traffic violations. Over the past weekend, officers conducted 63 traffic stops, although specific details on the locations and nature of violations were not provided.

Chief Sprow advises drivers to consider alternative routes to avoid the congested areas, with ODOT recommending a detour via I-475 North around Sylvania and Toledo, then south on I-75 to Perrysburg.
