Traffic Challenges Expected for Air Force Academy Graduation in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is bracing for significant traffic congestion as the Air Force Academy hosts its graduation ceremony. The event, which draws large crowds, will be further complicated by recent infrastructure changes and ongoing construction projects.

New Roundabouts and Visitors Center

Since last year’s graduation, new roundabouts have been constructed near the north gate of the Academy, alongside the new Hotel Polaris and a recently opened Visitors Center. These additions aim to improve traffic flow but may present challenges for visitors unfamiliar with the changes.

This year’s graduation marks the first opportunity for many attendees to navigate these new road features, potentially leading to delays as drivers adjust.

Thunderbirds Performance and Weather Concerns

The Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s demonstration squadron, are scheduled to perform, attracting thousands of spectators to the area. However, weather conditions that led to last year’s cancellation are present again this year, adding uncertainty to the day’s events.

Ongoing Construction and Vice Presidential Visit

Additionally, a drainage project on North Gate Boulevard could affect traffic between Interstate 25 and Struters Road. Drivers should also be aware of potential delays due to the motorcade for Vice President JD Vance, who is delivering the commencement address.

KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior will be monitoring traffic conditions throughout the day to provide updates and assist drivers in navigating the area.
