Toyota projects $6.4 billion annual cost for factory automation starting 2028

Tokyo – Toyota Motor announced that it expects to spend roughly 1 trillion yen (about $6.4 billion) per year beginning in 2028 to modernise its manufacturing facilities. The estimate covers the automaker, its group companies and major suppliers, and reflects a broad push toward greater automation and robotics on the factory floor.

Why the investment matters

Industry analysts note that automakers worldwide are turning to robotics to cut costs, mitigate ageing infrastructure and address persistent labour shortages. By expanding the use of industrial robots, automated logistics and human‑robot collaboration, Toyota hopes to keep its production lines competitive while preserving jobs that require higher‑skill oversight.

Scope of the automation plan

The company told investors that around 400,000 robots could be needed across its operations. The figure includes both replacements for existing equipment and new installations, encompassing humanoid and non‑humanoid robots. While Toyota did not specify the exact timeline or duration of the spending, the estimate signals a long‑term commitment to advanced manufacturing.

Industry context

Other global manufacturers are pursuing similar strategies. Hyundai, which owns Boston Dynamics, plans to deploy humanoid robots at its U.S. plant in Georgia starting in 2028. Such moves suggest a broader industry trend toward integrating sophisticated robotics to sustain growth beyond traditional vehicle sales.

Analyst perspective

Bernstein analysts wrote that Toyota’s heightened focus on robotics could increase investor appreciation for the company’s growth potential outside of pure automobile production. They expect announcements related to robotics to become more frequent as Toyota accelerates its efforts.

Potential impact on the workforce

Automation is expected to reshape the nature of factory work, creating demand for workers skilled in robot maintenance, programming and oversight. Toyota’s plan aligns with a wider push to address labour shortages by pairing human expertise with advanced technology, rather than replacing workers outright.

Financial context

The projected annual outlay of 1 trillion yen represents a significant investment, but Toyota views it as essential to maintaining its position as the world’s largest carmaker. The company believes that the efficiency gains and product quality improvements from advanced robotics will ultimately benefit shareholders and consumers alike.

For now, Toyota’s automation roadmap remains a forward‑looking plan, with details to be refined as the company works with suppliers and technology partners to bring the vision to life.
