In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month, Town Square Perry Hall – an adult enrichment center serving seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementias – kicked off a community‑wide fundraising and awareness drive called the Purple Promise Project. The initiative asks participants to write a personal promise on a strip of purple paper, symbolizing a concrete commitment to those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.
How the project works
Each promise becomes a link in a growing chain that will be displayed at the center’s Health and Wellness Fair on September 26. Organizers set a goal of 2,026 links, which would create a chain roughly 750 feet long – one of the largest Alzheimer’s‑awareness installations in the region. Participants are asked to donate $2 for each promise they add.
Community support and impact
“Alzheimer’s and dementia touch so many lives, but no family should ever feel like they are facing this journey alone,” said Keyonna Jordan, director of operations and programming at Town Square Perry Hall. “Each link in this chain represents an act of kindness and understanding, showing our members and caregivers that they have the support of our community.”
All funds raised will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association Maryland Chapter, which provides free helplines, support groups, education programs, and other services to families across Baltimore City, surrounding counties, Western Maryland, and the Eastern Shore.
Why the effort matters
More than 127,000 Maryland residents live with Alzheimer’s, and 258,000 caregivers contribute an estimated 292 million unpaid hours of care each year – a contribution valued at $7 billion. Ellen Torres, vice president of development for the Alzheimer’s Association Maryland Chapter, emphasized that “awareness generated through efforts such as The Purple Promise Project is essential to people impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.” She added that every dollar helps fund the 24/7 Helpline, support groups, and educational resources.
Getting involved
Town Square Perry Hall began the project on August 20 with a group activity that produced the first links. Visitors to the Health & Wellness Fair, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 26, can add their own promises to the chain throughout the event. After the ceremony, the completed chain will remain on display at the center.
Those who wish to contribute outside the fair can visit Town Square Perry Hall Monday‑Friday, 8:30 a.m.‑4:30 p.m., at 9708 Belair Road, Perry Hall, or donate online. For questions, contact the center at [email protected].
