Tomball and Magnolia merchants grapple with higher rent, utilities and supply costs

Business owners across the Tomball and Magnolia area are feeling the squeeze as operating costs climb steadily over the past year. Owners cite higher rent, utility bills, gas prices and the cost of imported supplies as the primary drivers of the increase.

Owners describe the ripple effect

Billy Schiel, who has lived in Tomball for 45 years and runs Honor Society Coffee, recently added two new locations and employs 30 staff members. Schiel says the surge in gas prices and the price of goods has forced him to raise payroll to retain good employees.

“Employees want to make more money, and if you want to have good employees that want to work for you and do a good job, you have to pay them more,” Schiel explained. “Then it costs a lot more money for them to drive their car back and forth, so it’s a circle, right?”

Restaurant sector feels the pinch

The Texas Restaurant Association’s recent economic insights poll shows many eateries are wrestling with higher labor and operational costs. The poll indicates that 38% of restaurant owners say they lack the workforce they need to be successful, a figure that underscores the broader staffing challenges facing the hospitality industry.

Bakery and hair‑care businesses see similar trends

Magnolia’s Flour Petal Bakery, owned by Courtney Nguyen, reports that basic supplies such as flour and sugar have become more expensive. Nguyen attributes the hikes to increased tariffs and rising oil and gas costs, which affect transportation and production.

“I’ve gotten two emails this year from our distributors for just basic supplies like flour and sugar, that they’re having to increase prices again because of increased tariffs and then the increased costs in oil and gas,” Nguyen said.

Similarly, Tina & Allie’s Hair Parlor, run by longtime partners Tina Paez and Allie Macias, notes that imported hair‑care products, including clippers and coloring supplies, have risen compared with last year.

Economic sentiment in Harris and Montgomery counties

Researchers from the Houston Population Research Center note a shift in consumer confidence. In a 2025 poll, 70% of respondents felt positive about job opportunities in the Houston area. By early 2026, that optimism had fallen below 50%, marking the steepest single‑year decline since the early 1980s oil crisis.

“In 2026, the number one problem that people identify facing the Houston area is the economy, point blank,” said director Daniel Potter. “That 70% number that we were talking about at the start of 2025 was under 50% by the time you got to the start of 2026.”

Potter emphasized that consumer perception drives local spending: when residents feel the economy is strong, they invest and shop locally; when confidence wanes, they cut back regardless of actual economic conditions.

Local development agencies step in

Both the Magnolia and Tomball economic development corporations have announced programs aimed at helping small businesses weather the cost surge. Initiatives include low‑interest loans, grant opportunities for equipment upgrades and assistance navigating supply‑chain challenges.

Community leaders encourage residents to shop locally and support these businesses as they adapt to the higher cost environment. By bolstering local commerce, the area hopes to preserve jobs and maintain the vibrant small‑business culture that defines Tomball and Magnolia.
