TOLEDO, Ohio – A mother who wishes to remain anonymous says her family is preparing to leave Beacon Place Apartments after a persistent rat infestation that management has failed to resolve. She moved into the complex in May 2024 after friends recommended the property.
Infestation timeline and health concerns
The resident reports that rats first appeared in July of this year. She describes holes in kitchen cabinets, a hole in the hallway floor and recent sightings of rodents in her trash can. “Even my daughter came close to eating rat poop,” she said, emphasizing the health risk to her children.
Although maintenance has set traps and the tenant has attempted to seal entry points, the rodents continue to re‑enter the building. She says she caught a rat in a trap on Monday, but the problem persists.
Landlord’s lack of response
According to the tenant, attempts to contact the property manager have been ignored. “She’s not answering emails, phone calls, even upper management has tried to reach her,” the resident said, adding that she has also reached out to local housing authorities for assistance.
The resident hopes her experience will serve as a warning to other renters and a call for property managers to take tenant concerns seriously. “Landlords need to take their tenants seriously,” she said.
Management’s silence
13 Action News reached out to Beacon Place Apartments for comment. Calls were directed to voicemail and no response has been received to date.
What renters can do
Tenants facing similar issues are encouraged to document all communications with landlords, keep records of pest control attempts, and contact local housing agencies if problems remain unresolved. Prompt reporting can help ensure that property owners address health‑related violations in a timely manner.
