An Arizona toddler who was declared dead after a near-drowning incident was found alive in a hospital morgue hours later, according to police. The 18-month-old boy, Vincent Fiordilino, was attending a Super Bowl party with his parents when he disappeared from their view and was later found floating face down in a backyard swimming pool.
Investigation and Charges
Investigators say Vincent’s parents, who admitted to smoking marijuana during the party, were impaired and did not notice their son’s fall into the pool. The police report alleges that the parents’ impairment led to a delay in discovering the toddler’s near-drowning. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the Gilbert Police Department’s recommendation that Vincent’s parents face felony child abuse charges.
After being pulled from the water, Vincent was transported to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where a doctor pronounced him dead. However, hours later, medical personnel discovered that the toddler was alive and breathing after he had already been transferred to the hospital’s morgue. Vincent was immediately airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for treatment.
Medical Review and Aftermath
A Dignity Health spokesperson said the hospital conducted a thorough review of the care provided to Vincent and is working with the family to ensure the best possible outcome. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support the family, describing Vincent as a ‘miracle baby’ after he survived the ordeal.
