Today marks the 306th day of 2026, and it’s also a day to remember a pivotal moment in American political history. On November 2, 1948, incumbent President Harry S. Truman achieved a stunning upset, defeating the widely‑expected Republican nominee, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey.

Why the 1948 election mattered

Most pollsters and newspapers had predicted a Dewey landslide, yet Truman’s vigorous whistle‑stop campaign and appeal to working‑class voters turned the tide. The result reshaped the post‑World War II political landscape and reinforced the importance of grassroots outreach.
