Livonia firefighters rescue trapped deer from pool, urge owners to check covers

When a local deer slipped through a pool cover at a private residence in Livonia, Michigan, the city’s fire department sprang into action. The incident, posted on the Livonia Fire Department’s Facebook page, highlighted both quick thinking by first‑responders and a reminder for pool owners to keep wildlife safety in mind.

How the rescue unfolded

Police officers arrived on the scene first and, recognizing the animal’s predicament, called for fire‑department assistance. Because the pool was only partially drained, the deer could not gain enough footing to climb out on its own. Firefighters responded with an extension ladder, lowering it into the water so the animal could use it as a makeshift ramp.

“Our firefighters lowered an extension ladder into the pool, giving the deer a way to climb out,” the department’s post read. “Once the ladder was in place, the deer successfully rescued itself and ran off, apparently uninjured!”

Community safety message

Livonia Fire used the rescue as a public‑service reminder. Pool covers, while useful for keeping debris out, are not always wildlife‑proof. The department advised owners of inground pools to regularly inspect their covers for gaps or damage and to consider installing an approved wildlife‑escape ramp. Such ramps provide a safe exit route for any animal that might become trapped.

“Great teamwork by our Livonia Police officers and firefighters,” the post added. “We’re always ready to answer the call, even when the patient has four legs.” The statement underscores the department’s commitment to protecting both residents and the local ecosystem.

Why the story matters to Livonia families

Beyond the novelty of a deer rescue, the incident touches on several core community concerns. First, it showcases the readiness of local public‑safety agencies to handle unexpected emergencies, reinforcing confidence in emergency services. Second, it highlights the importance of responsible home maintenance—something that directly affects families who enjoy backyard pools during Michigan’s warm summer months.

Livonia’s city officials have long promoted safe, family‑friendly recreation spaces. By sharing practical tips on pool safety, the fire department aligns with the city’s broader effort to protect children, pets, and wildlife alike.

Looking ahead

While the deer escaped unharmed, the incident serves as a reminder that wildlife often ventures into suburban neighborhoods. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, report injured animals to local authorities, and support city initiatives that balance human recreation with animal welfare.

For more information on pool‑cover safety and wildlife‑escape solutions, Livonia homeowners can contact the fire department directly or visit the city’s official website.
