Titletown Fish Fry Culture Lives On at Chippers Bar & Grill

Chippers Bar & Grill on Green Bay’s west side has been running a Friday night fish fry long enough that the regulars don’t need to look at the menu. They already know what’s coming: a plate of beer-battered cod, a side of potato pancakes or fries, a cup of coleslaw, and a rye bread slice on the edge of the plate. This is standard-issue Wisconsin supper, and at Chippers, it’s done well and priced to fill you up without much damage — most fish fry plates run between ten and fifteen dollars depending on the cut and quantity.

The building sits off a commercial stretch, nothing scenic about the parking lot or the exterior. Inside, it’s a proper bar: low lighting, wood paneling, a handful of TVs tuned to whatever game is on, and a bartender who moves efficiently. Booth seating lines the walls, tables fill the middle, and on a Friday evening from late autumn through spring, nearly all of it is occupied by six-thirty. Early arrival matters here — the crowd is real and it doesn’t wait around.

The cod is the draw, but the perch is what the regulars quietly order. It costs a little more and takes longer, but the pieces come out lightly breaded and properly fried — not soggy, not overdone. A half-order is enough for most people. The potato pancakes arrive hot and crisp on the outside, dense in the middle, with applesauce and sour cream on the side. Skip the french fries here unless the kids are involved.

The bar runs a standard Wisconsin tap selection alongside bottles, and the brandy old fashioned — sweet, made with Korbel and a muddled cherry — is the traditional order. The bartenders pour them the right way, which means they’re not skimping on the brandy and they’re not over-sweetening it. A well old fashioned runs about seven dollars. The tap beers are cold and modestly priced.

Service is attentive when it can be and busy when it needs to be. Chippers doesn’t staff up for theater — they staff up to get food out. The kitchen runs hot on Fridays, and the wait for food is honest and predictable. Most tables see their plates within twenty to twenty-five minutes of ordering, which is reasonable given the volume.

Chippers draws a crowd that’s mostly Green Bay west-siders who have been coming here for years. Retirees, union workers, families with teenagers, couples who’ve run out of things to talk about but are comfortable enough to sit quietly over a good plate of fish — all of them show up on Friday. It’s not a destination for visitors with a checklist; it’s a neighborhood bar that takes its fish fry seriously in the way that matters: consistent, affordable, and worth coming back to.

The place is cash-friendly, the parking is free, and the dress code is whatever you wore to work. Hours run through the evening on weekdays, with Friday drawing the heaviest crowd. For a genuinely local Friday night fish fry in Green Bay, without the wait at the more famous spots, Chippers is a reliable call.
