Titans waive former starter Will Levis as roster cuts near deadline

The Tennessee Titans have moved on from quarterback Will Levis, waiving him just before the league‑mandated deadline to trim rosters to 53 players. The decision was confirmed by multiple sources on Friday, August 30.

Background on Levis’ tenure

Levis, 27, entered the NFL as the 33rd overall selection in the 2023 draft after Tennessee traded up eight spots to acquire him. He made an early splash, throwing for 238 yards and four touchdowns in a 28‑23 win over the Atlanta Falcons in his first start during Week 8 of his rookie season.

Despite that promising debut, Levis was unable to sustain the performance. He finished his rookie year with a 3‑6 record, and the following season he started the Titans’ offense, posting 2,091 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The team went 2‑10 in games he started and eventually replaced him with Mason Rudolph. Tennessee finished the 2024 campaign 3‑14, positioning the franchise to select Cam Ward first overall in the 2025 draft.

Injuries and missed time

Levis missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing right‑shoulder surgery during training camp, an issue that had also plagued him the previous year. An ankle injury further limited his availability as a rookie.

He returned for the 2026 offseason hoping to compete for a roster spot, but the Titans signed veteran Mitchell Trubisky to a two‑year contract and gave him the bulk of the work behind Ward during camp.

Current roster implications

With Levis waived, Trubisky becomes the clear second‑string quarterback behind Ward. The move reflects the Titans’ commitment to building around their first‑overall pick, who is expected to be the centerpiece of the offense for the coming years.

Levis was entering the final year of his rookie contract, and his departure closes a turbulent period marked by multiple coaching and front‑office changes. The organization shifted from viewing him as a potential successor to former starter Ryan Tannehill to focusing on Ward as the long‑term solution at quarterback.

What’s next for Will Levis?

Levis is now a free agent and will likely seek an opportunity with another NFL team that needs depth at the quarterback position. His experience as a starter and his demonstrated arm talent could make him an attractive option for clubs looking to add competition or insurance behind their primary signal‑callers.

The Titans’ decision underscores the harsh reality of NFL roster management, where performance, health and strategic direction dictate personnel moves. As the league heads into the regular season, fans will watch to see how Ward and his supporting cast perform, and whether the team’s focus on a single franchise quarterback pays dividends.
