Jurors in Tipp City, Ohio, resumed hearing the murder case against former “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn on Monday, focusing on a recorded police interview in which Flynn describes a puzzling encounter the day before his wife, Ashley Flynn, was fatally shot.

Flynn’s account of the visitor

In the interview, Flynn says a car pulled up outside his home on February 15 and a man with long hair stepped onto the front porch. The man, who wore no visible company logo, approached the door and offered Ashley a “weird” sales pitch that involved an American flag. Flynn says Ashley closed the door after the man indicated he would return later.

Flynn told investigators that his daughters, ages 10 and 12, were in the living room at the time and that his younger daughter could confirm the visitor’s presence. He also noted that the family dogs were with him on the couch when he fell asleep, and that one dog began shaking and scratching, waking him.

Events leading up to the shooting

Flynn says he checked on his daughters, tucked the youngest back into bed, and lay down beside her. He was then awakened by “back‑to‑back” gunshots that he described as “loud.” Detective Sergeant Mike Morgan testified that Flynn froze for four to six seconds before sprinting across the house to the master bedroom, where he discovered Ashley had been shot in the back of the head.

Prosecutors allege Flynn staged the scene to look like an intruder broke in, and they have charged him with aggravated murder and related offenses. Flynn has pleaded not guilty.

Other testimony and evidence

Earlier in the trial, Flynn’s former mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified about an alleged year‑and‑a‑half affair, reading messages that suggested Flynn had spoken about wanting his wife dead. Botner also said she believed Flynn’s plans for February 16 meant he intended to leave Ashley, not kill her. The prosecution has indicated they may call the couple’s daughters to testify by audio, though a final decision has not been made.

Investigators have not recovered the firearm believed to have been used, and no eyewitnesses were present at the shooting. Forensic testing showed no gunshot residue on Flynn’s hands.

Trial status

The prosecution says they have several additional witnesses they intend to call as they move toward resting their case. The defense continues to challenge the prosecution’s narrative, emphasizing the lack of physical evidence linking Flynn directly to the shooting.
