A tip from a concerned citizen helped Scott County investigators uncover a suspected multi-county theft ring. Sheriff Jerry Goodin said last week deputies responded to a tip and found a stolen truck in rural Scott County. What first appeared to be a single recovery quickly expanded into a much larger investigation spanning other counties.
Investigation Details
According to the sheriff, deputies did not stop after recovering the first vehicle. Instead, they continued investigating in Scott, Clark and Washington counties. During the investigation, deputies recovered two trucks, a car, a utility trailer, two ATVs, guns, and several hundred tools and household goods.
The method used by the suspects involved targeting properties of deceased individuals or those who would be away for an extended period, knowing that it would lead to a delayed call to the police. Cory Daniel Smith, 32, of Scottsburg, Indiana, was arrested for burglary, theft, possession of methamphetamine, and other charges. Richard Colton Howard, 36, of Scottsburg, Indiana, was also arrested for similar charges.
