Time Out names Seoul’s Jongno 3‑ga the world’s coolest neighborhood for 2026

Travel lovers and families looking for a genuine home‑away‑from‑home experience have a new destination to add to their lists. Time Out, the global culture guide, announced its 2026 “world’s coolest neighborhoods” ranking, placing Jongno 3‑ga in Seoul, South Korea, at the very top.

Why Jongno 3‑ga stands out

Jongno 3‑ga is a bustling foodie hub that blends historic Korean heritage with a modern, independent‑business scene. The area earned a spot on Time Out’s list before, ranking third in 2021, and has since risen thanks to a surge in late‑evening alfresco dining, new indie shops and a lively street‑market atmosphere.

Grace Beard, Time Out’s travel editor, explained, “Neighborhoods that once were featured often hold their own and become even cooler. Jongno 3‑ga moved from third‑coolest in 2021 to the top spot because of its vibrant evening dining scene and the growth of independent businesses.”

First‑hand impressions

Anna Barra, a Portuguese tourist, described the district as a “mix of culture and foods… old and new together, it’s very cool.” Visitors can wander among street‑market stalls, sample traditional Korean dishes, and enjoy the neighborhood’s seamless blend of past and present.

Local café employee Myung Guen praised the area’s history and culinary offerings, noting that “there’s really good dessert in this neighborhood,” and that lines often form outside popular spots like Mil Toast, a fluffy steamed‑bread café that Time Out recommends for a perfect day in Jongno 3‑ga.

Other top neighborhoods

Time Out’s list also highlights four additional districts that families and culture‑seekers may want to explore:

  • L’Ocean District, Rabat, Morocco – a beachside area now home to a Four Seasons hotel while retaining independent shops and local flavor.
  • Neos Kosmos, Athens, Greece – an artsy neighborhood celebrated for its creative spaces.
  • Chinatown, Los Angeles, USA – the highest‑ranking U.S. district, praised for honoring its history while constantly reinventing itself.
  • Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland – described by local business owner Aimée Ballinger as the “most welcoming and culturally rich place” she has ever lived in.

Govanhill’s indie bookstore Burning House Books, run by Ballinger and her partner Benjamin, exemplifies the community‑driven revitalization that Time Out seeks. Ballinger said, “I’m honored to be part of the community, raising my kid here and bringing challenging, beautiful, inspiring books to our neighborhood.” Adrian Nicholls, owner of a local LGBTQ+ bar, added that Govanhill is “a real hub of community and culture in a way that’s so rare to find these days.”

City‑center revival

Beard noted a broader trend: many of this year’s selections are central, downtown districts that have been “reawakened” with new creative spaces, bars and dining options. This shift reflects a post‑COVID resurgence of urban life, moving away from the ghost‑town image many city centers once held.

Time Out’s annual list is compiled by its worldwide network of writers and editors, who nominate neighborhoods that feel alive, welcoming and full of local character. As Beard summed up, “We look for places that have just reached their moment, where in‑the‑know locals sense a unique ‘nowness.’”

For families, faith‑centered travelers, and anyone seeking authentic cultural experiences, Jongno 3‑ga and the other highlighted districts offer a blend of history, community and modern amenities that align with traditional values and the desire for genuine, family‑friendly exploration.
