Tim Ream Named Captain of U.S. Men’s Soccer Team for 2026 World Cup

The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team has gathered in Fayetteville, Georgia, to begin preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Leading the team is Tim Ream, a seasoned defender who has been named captain. Ream, at 38, will make history as the oldest U.S. player to participate in a World Cup.

Leadership On and Off the Field

Ream’s appointment as captain was announced by Coach Mauricio Pochettino during a recent news conference. The decision came as a surprise to Ream, who expressed his gratitude and commitment to the team. “This is more than a dream come true,” Ream said. “I’ve done everything possible to be a part of this group, to help this group along. I’m just really, really grateful to be sitting here, to have this honor.”

Ream’s leadership extends beyond the soccer field. Coach Pochettino praised him as a positive influence both on and off the pitch, highlighting his experience and capacity to lead. Ream has captained 26 of his 80 appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team and has been a pivotal figure under Pochettino’s coaching.

From College to World Stage

Ream’s soccer journey began at Saint Louis University, followed by a professional career with the New York Red Bulls in 2010. He later moved to England, playing for Bolton and then Fulham, where he spent a decade. In 2024, Ream returned to Major League Soccer with Charlotte FC, continuing to demonstrate his leadership qualities.

The U.S. team will play a friendly match against Senegal on Sunday, as they gear up for the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11. The U.S. is set to host one of the opening ceremonies in Los Angeles on June 12, featuring a star-studded lineup of performers. The other ceremonies will take place in Mexico City and Toronto.
