Tim Cook’s Final Major Move as Apple CEO: AI Strategy Unveiled

As Tim Cook prepares to step down as Apple’s CEO, he is expected to unveil a significant update to the company’s artificial intelligence strategy at the Worldwide Developers Conference. This could mark one of his final major public appearances in his current role.

Revamping Siri

Apple plans to introduce a new version of Siri, potentially aligning it with leading AI technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. This upgrade aims to enhance Siri’s capabilities, allowing it to handle multiple tasks through a single command and feature a chatbot-style interface.

Apple’s collaboration with Google on the models powering the new Siri could significantly boost its performance. Anurag Rana, a senior equity analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, noted that the Gemini models have been performing exceptionally well.

AI Strategy Under Scrutiny

Despite Apple’s success in hardware sales, investors have been eager to understand how AI fits into the company’s long-term vision. The new AI strategy could address these concerns, especially as Apple has faced delays in rolling out AI features and has lagged behind competitors in this area.

Apple’s existing AI tools, known as Apple Intelligence, have not distinguished themselves in the market. However, the company’s vast market share, with over 2.5 billion devices in use globally, provides a strong foundation for future AI developments.

Leadership Transition

As Cook transitions to a new role as executive chairman of the board, John Ternus, currently overseeing Apple’s hardware engineering, will take over as CEO in September. This leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for Apple as it seeks to solidify its position in the AI landscape.

Gene Munster, cofounder of Deepwater Asset Management, expressed confidence in Apple’s ability to execute its AI strategy, emphasizing the high stakes involved.
