Thunder star Jalen Williams and rookie Cason Wallace face surgery and rehab

Oklahoma City – The Oklahoma City Thunder are confronting a challenging stretch after starters Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace sustained injuries that will both need surgery. Both players are expected to miss significant time while they undergo procedures and a structured rehabilitation program.

Injury details and surgical outlook

Williams suffered a dislocated ankle and a fractured fibula during the Thunder’s recent game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Orthopedic surgeon Byron Detweiler, who specializes in sports medicine, noted that the dislocation likely involves ligament damage in addition to the broken bone, meaning the surgery may need to address more than just the fracture.

Wallace, the team’s promising guard, tore the labrum in his shoulder in the same game. The labrum is a ring of cartilage that stabilizes the shoulder joint. Detweiler emphasized that even if the injury is not on the shooting arm, a stable shoulder is essential for any basketball player.

Rehabilitation process

Both athletes will begin with a focus on restoring range of motion. “We want to get range of motion first, then we can work on some light strengthening as things are healing and stabilizing,” Detweiler said.

After the initial phase, the rehab will progress to more intensive strengthening and functional training. The surgeon highlighted the unpredictable nature of contact sports: “That contact‑sports aspect is the toughest thing because unexpected stuff happens. That’s how we get hurt in the first place.”

Assessing readiness to return

Detweiler explained that doctors compare an athlete’s strength to pre‑injury levels before clearing them to play. He aims for players to be at least 90% of their prior strength on both sides of the body before considering a return.

He cautioned that even after healing, there can be a higher risk of future problems if the shoulder or ankle is not fully stable. “We know if we send them back too soon, they can re‑injure or injure something else,” he said.

Optimism and support

Despite the uncertainty, Detweiler expressed optimism. “We hope and pray for the best, and nobody has a crystal ball. Nothing is 100%. But they’ve got a great team taking care of them, and I think they’re going to be just fine,” he said.

The Thunder organization has not released a timeline for the players’ return, but fans can expect regular updates as the rehabilitation progresses.
