Thousand Oaks’ first and only homeless shelter, Thrive Grove, has marked its first anniversary with positive results. The $8 million shelter, located at 1205 Lawrence Drive, has provided housing and support services to 46 people, with four transitioning to permanent housing.
Community Acceptance and Results
Despite initial skepticism from some residents, the shelter has been largely embraced by the community. Rick Schroeder, president and CEO of Many Mansions, said, ‘They are happy to get into this community. They seem to be satisfied with being here.’ The shelter provides more than just housing, with residents assigned case managers who connect them with services tailored to their needs, including substance abuse treatment, mental health resources, and job training.
The center has also provided on-site support services to help those with substance abuse issues. Since opening, the number of unhoused individuals in Thousand Oaks has dropped from 123 to 87, according to the annual Point-in-Time count. Authorities attribute some of this decline to the establishment of the center.
Funding Challenges
However, the shelter is facing funding challenges, with costs exceeding initial projections. The city’s operating agreement with Hope the Mission provided for an annual operating budget of $1.2 million, but expenses reached nearly $1.3 million, creating a budget shortfall. The city council has approved an additional $250,000 to cover the gap.
