Three injured in early‑morning shooting in southeast Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. – In the early hours of Monday, officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Birney Place in southeast Washington after receiving reports of gunfire. The first responders arrived at approximately 1:12 a.m. and discovered three victims at the scene: two adult men and one adult woman.

All three individuals were conscious, breathing, and receiving immediate medical attention from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The victims were quickly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment of their gunshot wounds. Hospital officials have not released detailed medical information, but the patients are reported to be in stable condition.

Police have not yet identified a suspect or released any description of a possible shooter. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area, interviewing witnesses, and canvassing the neighborhood for additional information.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, heard the gunshots, or has any knowledge about the shooter to contact the Metropolitan Police Department’s Crime Stoppers line at 202‑727‑9099 or submit a tip via text at 50411. Tips can be provided anonymously, and callers will be protected from retaliation.

Community response and safety concerns

Residents of the Birney Place area expressed concern over the incident, noting that the neighborhood has experienced a rise in violent crime over the past year. Local community leaders have called for increased police patrols and greater engagement between law‑enforcement and neighborhood groups to help deter future violence.

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office has not yet issued a statement specific to this shooting, but the mayor’s administration has previously emphasized a commitment to public safety and the allocation of resources to high‑crime areas throughout the District.

What’s next?

The Metropolitan Police Department will continue to investigate the shooting, working closely with the District’s Office of the Attorney General and federal agencies as needed. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

In the meantime, officials encourage residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and support one another as the community works to restore a sense of safety in southeast Washington.
