Third Future Takes Over Waco Schools

Waco ISD has partnered with Third Future Schools to take over two struggling schools, South Waco Elementary and Dean Highland Elementary. The decision was made to improve the schools’ performance after they received failing grades under the state’s accountability system.

Changes Ahead

Laneisha Latimer, a parent of a student at South Waco Elementary, is hopeful that the new structure and rules will help her son, who has struggled with behavior and academics. The school day will be more tightly scheduled, with students walking in silence between classes and demonstrating their understanding of lessons through writing or peer discussions.

The school will also have 10 more instructional days than other Waco ISD schools. Latimer believes that the additional rules and structure will work for her son, who needs a more focused environment to succeed.

Transition Process

Waco ISD and Third Future Schools have conducted multiple town halls for families since spring to discuss the transition. However, parents have had many questions leading up to the first day of school. Teacher assignments were delayed due to calendar and technology access issues, but school officials are working to assign duties for afterschool activities.

Afterschool programs will start on the first day of school, and the school building will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to meet the needs of students and parents. Parents are responsible for transportation outside of normal bus times.
