The Secret Garden of Glass: Why the Morse Museum’s Neighbor Is Orlando’s Most Underrated Afternoon

There is a particular kind of afternoon in Orlando that sneaks up on you — the kind where you wander into somewhere quiet and unhurried and walk out feeling genuinely moved. That is exactly what happens every time I visit the Mennello Museum of American Art, tucked along the lakeside edge of Loch Haven Cultural Park near the Milk District and College Park neighborhoods. It is small by design, intimate by nature, and quietly one of the most rewarding cultural stops in the entire city.

The Mennello sits right on the grassy bank of Lake Formosa, and before you even step inside, the setting earns its keep. On a clear Florida morning, the light bounces off the water and filters through the live oaks surrounding the building. There are benches outside where locals come just to sit. Bring a coffee, take a breath, and let the pace of the city fall away for a moment. That kind of effortless calm is surprisingly rare in a metro area that tends to run full tilt.

Inside, the permanent collection centers on the brilliantly colorful folk art of Earl Cunningham, a largely self-taught painter from Maine who eventually made Florida his home and his muse. His landscapes — glowing sunsets over marshes, moonlit coastal waters, luminous skies in shades of orange and violet — feel less like paintings and more like memories. Cunningham had a gift for capturing a vanishing Florida, the wild and unhurried version that existed before the theme parks and the sprawl. Standing in front of his work, you feel the humidity, hear the birds, and understand why he fell in love with this place.

Beyond the Cunningham galleries, the Mennello hosts a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions that pull from American folk art, outsider art, and self-taught traditions. Past shows have ranged from vibrant Mexican retablo paintings to contemporary works that challenge every expectation you walk in with. The curatorial team here is thoughtful — every exhibition feels considered, never random.

Admission is genuinely affordable, typically around five dollars for adults, which in today’s museum landscape feels almost rebellious. The staff are knowledgeable and approachable without hovering, and the museum shop carries a well-curated selection of books and prints that are actually worth buying.

Plan to spend ninety minutes here, then walk the lakeside path that connects the Mennello to the neighboring cultural campus. On weekends, the surrounding park often hosts local art markets and outdoor events, turning the whole area into one of Orlando’s most pleasant neighborhood afternoons.

The Mennello Museum is located at 900 East Princeton Street, just minutes from downtown. It is the kind of place that reminds you that the best discoveries in any city are rarely the loudest ones.
