The Hearthstone Historic House Museum Lit Up the Modern World — and It Still Glows

There is a house on Prospect Avenue in Appleton that quietly changed everything. Not metaphorically — literally. In 1882, the Hearthstone Historic House Museum became the first residence in the world to be powered by a centrally generated hydroelectric system, a feat engineered in partnership with Thomas Edison himself. Standing on the front porch, looking out over the tree-lined street, that fact settles over you in a way that no textbook ever quite manages.

I visited on a crisp Saturday morning, and the neighborhood itself sets the mood beautifully. Hearthstone sits in one of Appleton’s most graceful older residential corridors, surrounded by mature oaks and Victorian-era architecture that makes the whole block feel like a gentle step backward in time. The house is a Queen Anne-style beauty — ornate, confident, and remarkably well-preserved — and from the moment you step through the front door, the staff makes it clear that you are walking through a genuine piece of world history, not just a local curiosity.

The guided tours are the heart of the experience, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Our guide walked us through every room with infectious enthusiasm, explaining not just what we were seeing but why it mattered. The original Edison light fixtures are still in place. Some of the wallpaper and woodwork dates to the 1880s. The parlor, with its period furniture and warm afternoon light filtering through lace curtains, feels like a set designer’s dream — except none of it is staged. This is how the Oneida Street power station’s first residential customer actually lived.

What makes Hearthstone stand apart from so many house museums is the balance it strikes between intimacy and significance. You never feel like you are being lectured at. Instead, you feel like a curious guest who has been invited to look around, ask questions, and marvel at the audacity of what a mid-sized Wisconsin city accomplished before electricity was anything close to ordinary. The house does not shout its importance. It simply demonstrates it, room by room.

The museum also hosts rotating exhibits, seasonal events, and special programming throughout the year, including their beloved holiday tours during December when the house is decorated in Victorian finery that will make your jaw drop just a little. Check their calendar before you visit — catching one of those events is well worth planning around.

Admission is affordable, the tours run regularly, and the gift shop stocks a thoughtful selection of books and locally made items that make for meaningful souvenirs. Plan to spend about an hour and a half, longer if you are the type to linger over details — and in a place like this, the details are exactly where all the magic lives.

Appleton has a lot going for it, and most visitors have heard about the Houdini connection or the craft beer scene. But Hearthstone is the kind of discovery that reframes how you think about this city entirely. Come for the history. Leave with a completely new appreciation for what it means to flip a light switch.
