Omaha, Nebraska – In the wake of the devastating floods that struck the Omaha area on October 1, a grassroots effort is already making a tangible difference for displaced residents. The Furniture Project, a nonprofit located near 108th and L streets, has opened its doors to accept donations of sofas, tables, chairs and other household items to help families rebuild their lives.
Local volunteers step up
One of the first donors was Council Bluffs‑area moving‑company owner Carl Ziemba, who delivered a couch to the nonprofit’s drop‑off point at 10808 J St. “My heart and God just led me this way to do it,” Ziemba said. “People are in need, you know, and whenever you’re in need, you hope somebody else can help you.” Ziemba, who runs a moving business, expects the couch will be just the beginning of his contributions as the community continues its recovery.
Coordinated assistance
Tinca Joyner, community‑relations coordinator for The Furniture Project, explained that flood‑affected residents are being referred to the organization as they assess what they have lost. “As people find out what they lost in the floods, they are getting referred to us, and we will redistribute everything to them,” Joyner said. The nonprofit’s staff then matches each donation with a family in need, ensuring that essential furniture reaches those whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
Faith‑driven generosity
The response to the disaster reflects a broader pattern of neighbors stepping up when others need help. “We’re just grateful every time something like this happens, we really do see the community show up, and it’s a beautiful thing,” Joyner added. The project’s mission aligns with the Christian principle of serving one’s neighbor, a value that resonates strongly in Omaha’s close‑knit neighborhoods.
How to help
The Furniture Project is accepting donations Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items can be dropped off at the organization’s location on J Street. Residents who have been impacted by the flooding are encouraged to contact the nonprofit for assistance and to learn what items are most needed.
Looking ahead
As the city continues to assess flood damage and repair infrastructure, community‑based initiatives like The Furniture Project play a crucial role in restoring normalcy. By providing essential household goods, the nonprofit not only eases the physical burden of rebuilding but also reinforces the spirit of neighborly care that defines Omaha.
