Dayton, Ohio – A local nonprofit, The Change Agency, organized a rapid supply giveaway on Saturday, distributing almost 100 backpacks to people in need. The backpacks, each stocked with hygiene products, snacks and winter accessories, were claimed within 90 minutes as a line of residents gathered behind the agency’s office.
Community volunteers and peer support lead the effort
Gilbert Dillard, a peer support supervisor at The Change Agency, helped coordinate the distribution. Dillard, who draws on his own experience of long‑term homelessness and a 35‑year crack addiction, explained the importance of basic items. “I used to be homeless, 35‑year crack addiction, 20 years chronic homelessness. And I know I needed soap. I know I needed some deodorant. I knew I needed a toothbrush,” he said.
Dillard emphasized that the giveaway focused on everyday necessities: “Those kind of things that we know we need every day.” He noted that the event attracted both children and adults, each receiving toiletries, toothpaste and other small comforts to help them through the day.
Broader services offered by The Change Agency
Nurse supervisor Nicole Zale highlighted that the organization’s mission extends beyond the distribution of physical goods. The agency provides housing assistance, medical care, mental‑health support and recovery resources. It also runs a needle‑exchange program, offers Narcan training and distribution, and conducts STD testing and prevention services.
“The mission is always just to help as many people as we can in addiction, help mental health. We want to try to break the stigma in the community and lead people to recovery,” Zale said. She added that the agency remains open to anyone seeking help: “Whenever you’re ready for help, we’re here and we“re always available.”
How the community can continue to support
The Change Agency invites local residents to donate clothing and shoes seven days a week, helping sustain its outreach programs. Community members who wish to contribute can drop off items at the agency’s location or contact staff for further information.
This grassroots effort underscores the power of local nonprofits to address immediate needs while also offering pathways to long‑term recovery and stability for Dayton’s most vulnerable citizens.
