The Alley Celebrates 50 Years

The Alley, a Chicago punk institution, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a punk-themed block party and art show in Avondale. The event will feature over 50 local artists, music, and vendors.

Community Support

Owner Mark Thomas, a legendary member of the Chicago punk community, is grateful for the support of Avondale neighbors in making the anniversary party a success. The Alley has been a mainstay for Chicago’s punk and counter-culture community since it opened.

The art show, called ‘On The Periphery: Punk, Process and Freedom,’ will feature work that pays homage to punk and The Alley. Avondale Arts Chicago, a new nonprofit, is helping organize the show. The exhibit will be inside the Art Colony, next to The Alley, where artists will also have open studios displaying their work.

The anniversary celebrations are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. Vendors and food trucks will be assembled outside in two parking lots. There will also be a fashion show and six bands performing, including St. October and Bachelor’s Grove.

Legacy and Future

Thomas, a staunch supporter of independent artists, is hopeful The Alley can be around for 100 more years. However, he wants to see someone else at the helm. Since 2024, Thomas and his wife have been looking for the right successor to take over the business, which includes the Art Colony and the Music Factory.

A succession plan is being developed that could make The Alley a national brand, spreading the business’s combination of art, music, and punk to Los Angeles and New York City. The idea is to have two more brick-and-mortars in grimy warehouses near public transportation and near music venues.
