Thales Alenia Space lands €500 million contract with Eutelsat for EU IRIS² payloads

Thales Alenia Space, the Franco‑Italian aerospace joint venture, announced on Thursday that it has signed a €500 million agreement with satellite operator Eutelsat. The deal covers the supply of government‑grade payloads for 330 of the European Union’s IRIS² low‑Earth‑orbit satellites.

What the contract entails

The payloads are the technical equipment that will be mounted on Eutelsat’s satellite platforms. According to the companies, these modules will enable a secure, space‑based 5G network capable of in‑orbit traffic routing, active interference management and end‑to‑end encrypted communications. The agreement represents a tranche of the broader IRIS² programme, which is expected to exceed €3 billion in total value.

Why IRIS² matters for Europe

IRIS² is the EU’s planned sovereign satellite communications constellation. Its purpose is to give European governments and armed forces a reliable alternative to non‑European systems, most notably the Starlink network operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. By controlling the infrastructure, the EU aims to protect sensitive data and maintain operational independence in the face of growing geopolitical tensions.

Potential challenges ahead

While the contract marks a significant step forward, the programme faces questions about coordination. Germany is pursuing its own national military satellite network, raising concerns that fragmented efforts could drive up costs and delay deployment. Analysts note that a unified European approach would be more cost‑effective and ensure interoperability across member‑state forces.

Timeline for deployment

The first 66 IRIS² satellites are slated for launch beginning in 2029. Once in orbit, the constellation will provide secure communications for a range of governmental users, from diplomatic missions to battlefield units.

Industry impact

The €500 million order underscores the growing demand for secure space‑based services and highlights Thales Alenia Space’s position as a leading supplier of defense‑grade satellite technology. For Eutelsat, the partnership expands its portfolio beyond commercial broadband services into the strategic defense sector.

Both companies emphasized that the collaboration aligns with broader EU goals of technological sovereignty and resilience. As the EU continues to invest in its own space capabilities, contracts like this one are expected to spur further innovation and job creation across the European aerospace industry.
