Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has suspended the issuance of permits to buy firearms and ordered a review of existing licenses. This decision comes after a 14-year-old gunman killed nine people in a school shooting outside Bangkok.

Gun Control Measures

The Prime Minister has directed a deputy prime minister to expedite a new gun control law with stronger controls and harsher penalties. Police have been ordered to stop renewing permits that enable people to buy firearms. Registered firearms must be kept at home and cannot be carried in public.

Thailand has an estimated 10.3 million firearms in civilian possession, which is the highest rate in the region. The education minister has proposed new school safety measures, including screening everyone who enters education premises for illegal objects and weapons.
