Texas Wesleyan University is the only Tarrant County higher education institution receiving state money from a $5.8 million round of emergency and trauma care grants recently announced by Gov. Greg Abbott.

The university will receive $400,000 to continue a trauma care subspecialty for students in its Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program. The money will support two new cohorts from Aug. 3 through Aug. 2, 2028.

“Texas Wesleyan University is honored to have been awarded this grant to improve trauma care in Texas,” said Terri Kane, dean of Health School Professions.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board awarded 24 grants through the Emergency and Trauma Care Education Partnership Program. The program funds partnerships between hospitals and graduate medical or nursing programs to expand emergency and trauma care training in Texas.

Texas Wesleyan’s clinical partners include Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, JPS Health Network, PHI Air Medical and CareFlite, Kane said.

Impact

“This funding will expand emergency and trauma programs across the state to provide students with the education and resources they need and strengthen the Texas workforce,” Abbott said in the news release.

Texas hospitals that responded to a 2024 survey by Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies reported that 18.8% of full-time certified registered nurse anesthetist positions were vacant, up from 16.7% in 2022.
