Cooper Lutkenhaus, a 17-year-old track star from Texas, is on his way to becoming one of the best in his sport. With the Summer Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028, he could have a gold medal around his neck.
Early Success
Lutkenhaus is track and field’s youngest ever indoor or outdoor world champion, having won the 800 meters final at the World Indoors in March. He has been on an upward trajectory since picking up track in the eighth grade, winning consecutive Texas state titles as a high school freshman and sophomore.
At the World Outdoors in Tokyo, Lutkenhaus was eliminated in the preliminary round, but it was a valuable experience competing against elite international competition. With no World Outdoor Championships or Olympics to prep for this year, this is a seamless on-ramp into the pro ranks for Lutkenhaus.
Professional Debut
Lutkenhaus has already made his professional debut, signing with Nike in August. His first two appearances on the Wanda Diamond League circuit indicate that he’s prodigious, with a win in Stockholm and a new personal best in Oslo.
Lutkenhaus’ goal is not just to win titles but to make the sport more exciting. He wants people to enjoy every race he’s in, and with his rapid times and wins, he’s on track to become one of those rare track household names by the end of the decade.
