Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby Cleared to Play After Gambling Case Ruling

Brendan Sorsby, the quarterback for Texas Tech, has been cleared to play in the 2026 football season after a recent court ruling. This decision comes amidst a gambling controversy that nearly cost him his eligibility. Sorsby will serve a two-game suspension before returning to the field for the remainder of the season.

Temporary Injunction Granted

The 99th Judicial District Court has issued a temporary injunction allowing Sorsby to play while awaiting a final judgment. Texas Tech’s Director of Athletics, Kirby Hocutt, emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting Sorsby’s recovery and ensuring compliance with the court’s order. A comprehensive support structure, including clinical care and compliance checks, will be in place during his time at the university.

In late April, Sorsby was found to have placed numerous online bets across various sports, prompting the NCAA to attempt to declare him ineligible for the season. Sorsby filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, arguing that his betting activities did not affect his performance or that of Texas Tech University.

Reasons for Allowing Play

The court outlined three reasons why Sorsby would suffer if not allowed to play this season: he would miss out on elite coaching and training resources, he would be unable to develop necessary skills for the season, and he would not be able to make an informed decision about entering the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft.

Under the temporary injunction, Sorsby must continue counseling for gambling addiction and will miss the first two games of the season. Any violation of this agreement could lead to the NCAA seeking emergency relief, potentially barring him from the entire season.

Upcoming Season

Texas Tech’s football season kicks off on September 5 against Abilene Christian, with a Thanksgiving game scheduled against TCU. Fans can view the full schedule on the Texas Tech Athletics website.
