Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby Appeals NCAA Betting Ban Amid Addiction Recovery

Brendan Sorsby, a quarterback who recently transferred to Texas Tech, is at the center of a legal battle with the NCAA over his eligibility. Sorsby, who was declared ineligible after an investigation revealed he placed bets on Indiana football games during his tenure with the team, is seeking a temporary injunction to continue his college football career.

Legal and Personal Challenges

According to court documents, Sorsby placed at least 40 bets on Indiana football while enrolled at the university, totaling around $850. His gambling activities extended beyond Indiana, with a reported $90,000 wagered over four years using accounts registered to family and friends. Despite these findings, Sorsby maintains he never bet on games in which he participated or against his team.

The NCAA’s current policy prohibits student-athletes from betting on any NCAA-sanctioned or professional sports, with permanent bans possible for those betting on their own teams. Sorsby’s request for reinstatement was denied, prompting his lawsuit for an injunction to play in the 2026 season. A hearing is scheduled in Lubbock, Texas, where Sorsby hopes to overturn the NCAA’s decision.

Support and Rehabilitation

Sorsby has publicly acknowledged his struggle with a gambling addiction, recently completing a 35-day rehabilitation program in Arizona. He expressed gratitude for the support from his coaches, teammates, and university, emphasizing his commitment to recovery and a return to the field.

Texas Tech has appealed the NCAA’s decision, with university officials, including coach Joey McGuire and president Lawrence Schovanec, voicing support for Sorsby. Schovanec criticized the NCAA’s stance on sports betting, highlighting the rising issue of gambling addiction among college athletes.

As Sorsby awaits the court’s decision, he remains hopeful for a chance to continue his football career at Texas Tech, where he is projected to be the starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
