Texas Tech embraces Friday night home opener, honoring Texas high‑school football tradition

For Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire, Friday night football carries a special reverence. The Red Raiders, currently ranked 13th and defending Big 12 champions, will open conference play on Friday primetime against No. 22 Houston – the program’s first regular‑season home game on a Friday since 1941.

Friday night as “holy ground” for Texas prep football

McGuire, who led Cedar Hill High School to three state titles from 2003‑2016, said, “It’s weird because I’m so used to Friday nights in the state of Texas being kind of holy ground when it comes to Texas high school football.” He added that the upcoming game feels “huge” because it brings the tradition of Friday Night Lights to the college level.

Community and booster support

Texas Tech regents chair and longtime booster Cody Campbell voiced his enthusiasm on social media, calling Friday Night Lights “sacred in the Great State of Texas” and calling the move “absolutely absurd” if the Big 12 and Fox Sports had not considered it. Campbell’s comments reflect the deep cultural connection Texans have with Friday night high‑school football.

Big 12 television flexibility

The conference’s television contract permits up to 12 regular‑season games each year to be played on days other than Saturday. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark noted that Friday night games last season generated ratings 64% higher than the conference’s average, underscoring the appeal of the schedule shift.

More non‑Saturday games on the horizon

Tech’s schedule includes two non‑Saturday regular‑season games this year. After the Friday opener, the Red Raiders will close the season at home against TCU on Thanksgiving night. In the past 30 seasons, Tech played only six Friday games, all on the road, with the most recent in 2023.

Houston, also 2‑0, will play three Friday games this season, joining Tech as one of five teams with two Friday contests. The Cougars travel to Colorado on Nov. 13 for another Friday matchup.

Sellout crowd expected

Despite concerns about attendance, McGuire expects a sellout, noting that Tech has enjoyed ten consecutive home sellouts. “We have the best fan base in the country,” he said, adding that Friday Night Lights is “where it all began” for Texas football culture, referencing the iconic 1988 Permian High School team and the book and film that popularized the phrase.

Coach McGuire’s ties to high‑school football

McGuire remains a prominent figure in Texas high‑school football. He is a member of both the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Hall of Fame and the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Eleven members of his current staff have connections to the THSCA, and he frequently speaks at the association’s annual convention and hosts coaching clinics. During the pre‑game festivities, McGuire plans to wear his THSCA cap to honor prep coaches.

Looking ahead

The Friday night opener sets the tone for a season that will feature eight Big 12 matchups not played on Saturdays, with five of those occurring in November. Eleven of the league’s sixteen teams will participate in these non‑Saturday games, highlighting the conference’s commitment to flexible scheduling that respects Texas’s football traditions.
