As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Texas state troopers are ramping up patrols over the Fourth of July holiday to ensure public safety. The Texas Department of Public Safety announced stepped-up enforcement from July 2-5 under Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, or CARE, with additional troopers targeting speeding, intoxicated driving, Move Over Slow Down violations, and other offenses.
Public Safety Reminders
The Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee emphasized the importance of safety during this holiday period, reminding the public to make smart choices and be aware of their surroundings. Last year’s Fourth of July enforcement period saw troopers issue over 64,241 citations and warnings, including 5,042 for speeding and 277 DWI arrests.
The DPS urged drivers to avoid alcohol before driving, move over or slow down for stopped emergency and utility vehicles, wear seat belts, reduce speed in adverse conditions, and eliminate distractions such as handheld device use. For fireworks, the DPS recommended using them outdoors away from structures, keeping water nearby, supervising children, lighting one at a time, and soaking used devices before disposal.
