A tragic incident unfolded in Lake Jackson, Texas, when a Texas State University student, John Gabriel Mendoza Jr., was fatally shot by a Brazoria County Sheriff’s deputy. The event occurred early Monday morning after deputies attempted a traffic stop.
The 18-year-old student, who was studying management, was identified by the university, which expressed condolences to his family and friends. The attempted traffic stop took place just after midnight near Farm-to-Market 2004 and This Way Street.
According to the sheriff’s office, Mendoza did not comply with the stop, leading deputies to pursue his vehicle for approximately a mile into a neighborhood on Indian Warrior Trail. Mendoza reportedly drove into a home’s garage and parked.
As a deputy approached the vehicle, he discharged his firearm, striking Mendoza. The young man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure for the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting.
Efforts to obtain further details from the Lake Jackson Police Department and the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office have not yet been successful. This story is developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
