Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Rangers to investigate the fatal shooting of an illegal immigrant by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Houston last week.
Investigation Underway
The Texas Rangers are working independently to investigate the shooting, which occurred during a targeted enforcement operation. The ICE agent involved in the shooting claimed the illegal immigrant, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, attempted to ram an ICE law enforcement vehicle and refused to follow verbal commands, prompting the agent to fire in self-defense.
However, three other illegal immigrants inside the van disputed this account, stating that Araujo was shot from the passenger side and that ICE agents were not in front of the van. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially stated that Araujo was the target of the operation, but later clarified that he was not.
The incident has sparked controversy, with Democrats calling for a moratorium on ICE enforcement and President Donald Trump stating that ICE is doing important work and that traffic enforcement will continue.
Response from Officials
Houston Mayor John Whitmire called for transparency and accountability, urging the federal government to require body cameras and stronger training for ICE officers. Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of ensuring that immigration laws can be enforced without resulting in loss of life.
