A Texas Department of Criminal Justice bus carrying inmates overturned in a crash on State Highway 164 on Wednesday morning, according to the Groesbeck Police Department.
The single-vehicle wreck occurred just east of FM 3371, roughly 40 miles east of Waco. Groesbeck police described the incident as “major” in a Facebook post and closed both directions of the highway.
According to the TDCJ, the bus was carrying 26 inmates from county jails to the Gurney Unit in Palestine at the time of the crash. Three TDCJ staff members were also aboard.
Five inmates and one staff member were transported to a hospital, the agency said. The reported injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Police said no inmates escaped in the wreck.
“All occupants are accounted for and there is NO threat to the public,” Groesbeck Police Chief Chris Henson wrote in the department’s post.
Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area while crews worked the scene. The stretch of state Highway 164 between FM3371 and FM 39 is expected to remain closed until approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Google Maps.
The cause of the crash has not been released.
