Texas Longhorns set to host UTSA Roadrunners in season‑opening showdown

On Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. CST, the top‑ranked Texas Longhorns will host the UTSA Roadrunners in Austin. The matchup pits two unbeaten programs—Texas (2‑0) and UTSA (2‑0)—against each other in a game that could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Key statistics heading into the game

Texas boasts a stout defense, ranking 125th nationally in third‑down conversion defense by allowing opponents to convert just 50.0% of attempts. UTSA’s offense, meanwhile, sits at 129th in the FBS, converting 25.0% of its third‑down opportunities.

Both squads excel in the red zone. Texas ranks 16th, limiting opponents to scoring on 62.5% of red‑zone trips, while UTSA’s defense is 20th, allowing scores on 66.7% of trips.

Turnover margins also favor the Roadrunners, who sit fifth in the FBS with a +5 differential. Penalty discipline is a stark contrast: Texas averages only 23.5 penalty yards per game (fourth‑ranked), whereas UTSA accrues 115.0 yards per contest (137th).

Time of possession reflects Texas’s ability to control the clock, ranking 64th with an average of 30:31 per game. UTSA averages 26:46, placing them 114th.

Recent performances

Texas earned a narrow 24‑23 victory over Ohio State on Sept. 12. Quarterback Quinn Manning completed 23 of 37 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also contributing eight carries for 24 yards. Running back Jordan Smothers added 74 rushing yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, plus three receptions for 29 yards. Wide receiver Emmett Mosley V recorded five catches for 65 yards.

UTSA responded with a 31‑26 win over Texas State on the same day. Quarterback Blake McCown threw for 214 yards on 28 of 42 attempts, posting a 66.7% completion rate, one touchdown and no interceptions. Running back Marcus Henderson contributed 80 rushing yards on 14 carries and added two receptions for 21 yards. Receiver A.J. Wilson hauled in nine catches for 83 yards.

What to watch

Both teams have shown the ability to move the ball against quality opponents, but the Longhorns will look to tighten third‑down defense and maintain their disciplined penalty record. UTSA will aim to leverage its turnover advantage and keep Texas’s offense off the field.

Fans can catch the action on SEC Network+.

Looking ahead

After the Austin clash, Texas travels to face No. 15 Tennessee on Sept. 26, while UTSA will host Colorado State the same weekend.
