Texas lawmakers apologize after honoring Chris Brown at Arlington concert

During a concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sept. 12, Democratic U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Texas State Rep. Venton Jones presented singer Chris Brown with a Congressional Record recognition and a state proclamation. The honor was intended to celebrate “Black joy” in music, but quickly drew criticism because of Brown’s history of domestic‑violence convictions.

Backlash and apologies

Brown, 37, has a record that includes a 2009 felony assault conviction for physically attacking Rihanna, as well as multiple other allegations of violence against women. After the ceremony, the public outcry grew, prompting both lawmakers to issue statements.

Rep. Crockett, who announced the honor on stage, said, “Right now, we are experiencing Black joy to the highest level, and I wanted to make sure we document that in the Congressional Record.” She later faced criticism for appearing to overlook Brown’s past.

On Monday, Brown posted an Instagram story apologizing to Crockett for the backlash she endured, writing, “I apologize for any backlash you have to deal with for awarding for me. I’m not political but I move off of frequency and energy and I’m so grateful. Once again, thank you.”

Jones’ statement and political context

Rep. Venton Jones, who took office in 2023, released a statement on Tuesday apologizing to his constituents for his role in presenting the state resolution. He said the presentation was an attempt to reach voters ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm election and added, “First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the women, the Black women, whom my actions have hurt. In moments like these, I think it’s important to be specific and just as loud with an apology as our original actions were. I apologize.”

Brown responded on Instagram on Sept. 15, accusing Jones of political calculation: “I didn’t ask to be honored because I knew some s– like this would happen and [Venton Jones] immediately started tap dancing and apologizing because he didn’t wanna lose voters and support. I have a great idea.. how about [y’all] leave me the f– alone and let me focus on the fans that spent their money to actually see and support me.”

Broader concerns

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between elected officials seeking to engage with cultural events and community members demanding accountability for past misconduct. Critics argue that honoring individuals with documented histories of violence sends the wrong message, especially to survivors of abuse.

Supporters of the lawmakers contend that the recognition was meant to celebrate artistic contributions and cultural pride, not to excuse past behavior. They point out that the Congressional Record and state proclamations are symbolic gestures that can be separated from personal histories.

As the midterm election approaches, the episode may influence voter perceptions of candidates who align themselves with high‑profile entertainers. Both Crockett and Jones have indicated they will continue to listen to constituent feedback and adjust their outreach strategies accordingly.
