Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced an investigation into a South Texas hospital over what is known as birth tourism. The goal of the probe is to find out if Mission Regional Medical Center is marketing birth tourism to foreign nationals who enter the United States along the southern border before giving birth to an unborn child on U.S. soil, granting automatic citizenship.
Investigation Details
On Tuesday, Governor Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) would be taking up his request to get involved in the investigation. The Governor ordered HHSC to immediately refer any violations of state law to the Office of the Attorney General for civil enforcement and to the appropriate District or County Attorney for criminal prosecution.
Texas will be investigating a birth tourism scheme advertised as “havemybabyinTEXAS.com.” The practice of birth tourism exploits domestic health care and bypasses federal immigration law, according to Governor Abbott.
