Texas DPS Excels in Commercial Vehicle Safety Challenge

Corporal Kaleb Rains of Eastland was named DPS Grand Champion at the 34th annual Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Texas Challenge, a statewide competition focused on commercial vehicle safety rules. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the event, held in Corpus Christi, brought together 21 DPS personnel and nine Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) officers for a three-day competition.

Competition Details

Participants conducted inspections on various commercial vehicles and completed a written exam on regulations and procedures. Industry personnel and agency supervisors served as judges. The competition also featured safety training presentations for transportation professionals.

Corporal Dillon Steadman of Georgetown earned DPS Reserve Grand Champion, and Carrollton Police Department’s Ed Clark was named MCSAP Reserve Grand Champion. Both Rains and Scott Henderson, the MCSAP Grand Champion from the Houston Police Department, will advance to the North America Inspectors Championship in August.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has a long history of commercial vehicle enforcement, dating back to 1927 when the Texas Legislature created a license and weight inspection unit. Today, the department has 659 certified personnel statewide.
