Texas Division into 5 States Unlikely

Texas has a unique history of independence, with some residents suggesting the state could divide itself into five states. However, historians say this is unlikely due to the complexity of the process and the need for federal agreement.

Historical Background

In 1845, Texas was annexed to the United States via a joint congressional resolution, which included a provision allowing for up to four additional states to be formed from the territory, subject to the requirements of the Missouri Compromise.

According to Brian Franklin, associate director of SMU’s Center for Presidential History, this provision was included to address concerns about slavery and the balance of power in Congress. However, historians agree that this provision no longer applies, and any attempt to divide Texas would require federal approval.

Practical Challenges

Dividing Texas into five states would require significant changes to the state’s government, economy, and infrastructure. Texans would have to agree on new boundaries, divide resources such as oil money and university systems, and establish new power grids.

Calvin Jillson, an SMU professor, believes that the possibility of division often arises in the context of a potential increase in United States senators assigned to Texas. However, he notes that dividing the state would be antithetical to Texas’ identity and sense of self.
